What did James Buchanan do when Fort Sumter was threatened?
In January 1861, as Southern states were leaving the Union, an unarmed ship called the Star of the West tried to bring supplies to Fort Sumter and was fired on. Buchanan didn't respond. He left the crisis to the next president.
Why was James Buchanan called Ten-Cent Jimmy?
In 1856 Buchanan said ten cents a day was a fair wage for a laborer. Republicans started calling him Ten-Cent Jimmy. His own side went with Old Buck.
Did James Buchanan influence the Dred Scott decision?
Before the Supreme Court ruled on Dred Scott, Buchanan privately urged a Northern justice to side with the Southern majority. Then he told the country in his inaugural address to accept whatever the Court decided.
