A maze of square rings with Start outside and Finish in the middle

Four moves to a maze

  1. Draw it

Pencil, shapes, text, or paste a picture. Thin lines become walls the maze runs along.

  2. Mark Start and Finish

Drop the boxes where you want them. Add numbered checkpoints if you want a route.

  3. Paint the patterns

Long sideways halls for water, tall ones for sky, spirals, open rooms, a hallway with one big choice.

  4. Print it

Generate, reroll until you like it, and print. There is always exactly one way through.

The originals

About 20 years ago I worked tech support. When it got slow, I opened MS Paint and drew mazes one pixel at a time, for coworkers and friends, and mostly because I was bored. Each one took me 5 to 10 hours.

A-Mazing does the pixel by pixel part in about a second.

  • Hand drawn maze around five tic-tac-toe boards
  • Hand drawn maze of a lighthouse and house by the water
  • Hand drawn maze with six numbered checkpoints
  • Hand drawn maze around a Christmas tree
  • Hand drawn maze of square rings with Finish in the middle

Patterns you can paint

Paint an area with a pattern and the maze grows that way there. It still has one solution.

  • Hallway of directions

Five lanes side by side, then they split. Only one keeps going.

  • Yin yang twist

Two spirals wound together. One gets you through, one is a long way to nowhere.

  • Open rooms

Walk across, find the door into the next ring.

  • Sea

    Long sideways halls, like water.

  • Sky

    Tall up and down halls.

  • Spiral

The maze curls around where you started painting.

Can I sell it?

No. Make as many as you want for home, school, church or anything else that isn’t for sale. Print them, copy them, hand them out.

Don’t sell them, alone or in a book or a printable pack.

If you share or post one, keep the footer on it or link back to pettigrewlab.com/games.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no sign in, nothing to buy. There is a small ad lower on the page.

Can I sell what I make?

No. It’s free to use, not free to sell. If you share one, keep the footer or link back to pettigrewlab.com/games.

Can I use my own picture?

Yes. Paste it, drop it in or upload it, slide the light and dark setting until it looks right, and place it. Line drawings and clip art work best.

Is there always a solution?

Always exactly one. If your drawing walls off Start from Finish, the tool tells you where so you can open a gap.

How hard can it get?

Pick tiny pixels, a long path and lots of dead ends. A full page at the tiny size is hours of work for a person, which I know from experience.

Does my drawing get uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your draft is saved on your own device.
