Joyful

Keep track of your people, not just their birthdays.

A private friendship journal for the twenty people closest to you.

Your phone knows everyone’s number and nothing about them. Joyful is the other half: a place to keep what you know about the twenty people who matter most, and a nudge before the moments worth marking. Everything stays encrypted on your phone.

Coming to Google Play · free for three friendships

  • The Today screen, showing a memory from this day ten years ago and a birthday coming up
  • A friend’s page, showing favourite books, food and things to avoid
  • The Journal feed, showing memories by year
  • The gift log, listing ideas still to give

The dates no calendar knows about

Birthdays are the easy ones. Joyful is for the anniversary of the day she walked out of the job that was eating her, and the annual bad-movie night. Get nudged on the day, the day before, or a week ahead.

Notice when it’s been too long

Close friendships rarely end; they go quiet and nobody notices. Give one a rough rhythm and Joyful tells you when nothing has been written down for a while. A fact, never a score. There are no streaks here.

Everything you know about them

The books, the food, the drink they always order, the story they always tell, the thing never to bring up again. Plus a running log of memories, with photos.

Gift ideas, before you need them

Write an idea down the moment you have it. Every idea across every friendship collects in one list, so December isn’t a memory test.

Bring in what you already wrote

Share a post from Facebook or Instagram straight into the journal. Or import your own Meta download. It’s read entirely on your phone, and curated rather than dumped.

Private, properly

Encrypted on your phone, and it never leaves. No account, no server, no cloud sync, no analytics. No extra passcode either: your phone’s lock keeps it private.

Twenty people, on purpose

Joyful holds twenty friendships and no more. The limit is the point: this isn’t a contact list or a CRM, it’s for the handful of people you want to be deliberate about. The first three are free, and one payment, not a subscription, opens the rest.

What a friendship journal is for

Mostly for the moments you’d otherwise come up empty.

The week before a birthday

You open their page and it’s all there: the book they mentioned in March, the restaurant they keep talking about, the gift idea you wrote down in the car. The nudge came a week early, so there’s still time to do something with it.

After it’s gone quiet

Give a friendship a rough rhythm and Joyful tells you when nothing’s been written down for a while. It won’t score you and there’s no streak to break. It just points out the gap, so a text happens before the gap turns into a year.

When they tell you something big

The new job, the move, the kid’s name, the test results they were waiting on. Write it down that day, so the next time you talk you’re asking how it went instead of asking them to tell you again.

The dates that only matter to them

The day they left the job that was eating them. The first annual bad-movie night. Birthdays are on every calendar. These aren’t, and they’re the ones people remember that you remembered.

On this day, years ago

Memories come back on the date they happened. Open the app on an ordinary Tuesday and find the photo from the lake trip ten years ago, which is usually reason enough to send it to them.

A private journal, not another social app

Nothing in Joyful is for anyone else to see. There’s no profile, no feed, and nobody gets notified that you wrote about them. It’s closer to a private journal than to a contacts app, and it’s built like one.

Everything is encrypted and stays on your phone. There’s no account to make and no server keeping a copy, so there’s nothing of yours sitting somewhere to get breached. The honest tradeoff is that the phone is the only copy, so Joyful makes you a backup file, encrypted under a passphrase you choose, that you can keep wherever you like.

When you do want to share, say a friendship’s whole story for a milestone birthday, you can export a keepsake for one friend or the whole journal. It says plainly that once it leaves the app, it isn’t protected anymore.

How to start a friendship journal

  1. 1

    Pick the few people

Not everyone you know. The twenty slots are for the people you’d be sorry to drift from. Most people start with three or four and add the rest over a few weeks.

  2. 2

Write down what you already know

Their coffee order, the story they always tell, the thing never to bring up. Ten minutes per person gets you further than you’d think.

  3. 3

Add the dates no calendar has

Birthdays first, because they’re easy. Then the ones only you would know. Pick when each nudge comes: on the day, the day before, or a week ahead.

  4. 4

    Choose a rhythm, or don’t

Some friendships run on a weekly call and some on a yearly visit. Set a rough rhythm for the ones you want to keep an eye on and leave the rest alone. Joyful stays quiet until you do.

Questions about Joyful

Is Joyful a personal CRM?
Close, but on purpose it stops short. A personal CRM is built for a big network. Joyful holds twenty friendships and no more, and it keeps the things a CRM has no field for: the story they always tell, the thing never to bring up again.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s no sign up, no server and no cloud sync. The journal lives on your phone and nowhere else.
Is my journal encrypted?
Yes, on your phone. There’s no separate passcode to remember, though. Joyful opens when your phone does, so your phone’s screen lock is what keeps it private.
Will it remind me about birthdays?
Birthdays, and the dates no calendar knows about. You pick when the nudge comes: on the day, the day before, or a week before.
How do I stay in touch with friends without it turning into a chore?
Give a friendship a rough rhythm and Joyful tells you when nothing has been written down for a while. That’s all it does. No streaks, no score, and nothing at all until you choose a rhythm.
How do I reconnect with an old friend?
Keep the first message small and specific. Mention the thing you remembered about them, ask one easy question, and don’t spend a whole paragraph apologizing for the gap. Joyful helps with the remembering: what you know about someone stays in one place, so the next message has something real in it.
What does it cost?
The first three friendships are free. One payment, not a subscription, opens all twenty.
